Chinook Rugby (Formerly BGYR – Battle Ground Youth Rugby and Hockinson Youth Rugby) is an organization dedicated in providing an inclusive, fun, and dynamic environment for recreational rugby players. Rugby can be a lifelong sport and builds character and leadership within our youth.
The Chinook Rugby Club brings together players from throughout North & West Clark County. We cater to rugby players of all ages (Grades 2 to 12)
We are part of a regional league and our goal is provide a quality experience for our players.
Our Mission
Provide opportunities for student athletes to experience the game of rugby in Southwest Washington. We believe rugby builds character as we teach our “Values” to build self-confidence and leadership in our youth on and off the pitch. Support the development of boys and girls to advance onto regional, state, and national teams as they continue on beyond our youth program into college, Adult, National and Olympic leagues.
Our Values
Honor, Respect, Teamwork, Integrity, Self-confidence and Leadership. All coached through our priority goal; “Have Fun at practice and on game day”.
Player Goals
1 Primary Goal
Have Fun at Practice & on Game Day
What does “Fun” mean to you?
Many Coaches talk about Fun being important. At Chinook Rugby we really mean it. Think about a team playing an important game and it’s all tied up with an even score and only 5 minutes to go. Are the Players and the Coach still focusing on “Fun” or have they moved towards to stress of “Winning”? Your Chinook Rugby Players & Coaches are focused on “Fun” as it’s their one and only “Primary Goal”. Yes, teams having fun often win games and it is all because they focus on playing the game and having fun while they do it.
4 Secondary Goals – To ensure our Primary Goal is achieved
Respect
Respect The Game
Respect For: Officials – Opposition – Teammates – Coaches – Family – School – Community
Uphold the honor of the game
Respect the Opposition win or lose and all Officials (Referees) decisions. Take that respect into our Family, School & Community. We will have a lot more fun if we play as a team and respect and support each other on and off the field.
Support
At All times Support the Ball Carrier
This is when your teammate needs your support the most.
Support and “Lift” your teammates
When your teammate is feeling down, makes a mistake, or needs a hand up, our players help and support them with a pat on the back and a kind word. Support and encouragement for your teammates will build a strong team. We don’t groan, moan, or sigh when a mistake is made. We pat them on the back and say: “Don’t worry about it! Shake it off”. We will get a lot more fun, with the bonus or being more successful, if we play as a team and respect and support each other on and off the field.
Leadership
Leadership & Decision-Making. Coaches Coach but “Players” are the “Leaders” on and off the field
Coaches lead during the week and Players lead on game day
At Chinook Rugby we like to coach with a “Player Led” style. We encourage each player to take on a leadership role. Lead through motivation and helping with the improvement of the entire squad. On Game Day, Players not Coaches have to make the calls and lead on the field. Our Players have “Respect” for each other and support and encourage each other on and off the field so we can build a strong team of Leaders.
Protect Possession
Protect Possession of The Ball at All Times
With “Accurate Passing” & “Secure Catching”
When is it more fun to play?
When the other team have the ball or when your team is having fun running around passing the ball to each other?
